A Mission In Paradise

Over the past 5 years, I, team Peak member Leo Hoare have been a frequent visitor to the beautiful island of Mindanao in the Philippines.

Objective: To deliver safety and rescue training to rescue personnel from local Government units and rafting communities. With my good friend Chisum Christopher T. Factura (the Godfather of rafting in the Philippines) we are on a mission to bolster the capabilities of the government and private rescue organisations across the whole of the Philippines, that comprises of 7,641 islands.

When it rains in the Philippines, it really rains, getting 4 times the average annual rainfall than the UK, and like the UK they are regularly faced with devastation from flooding.

Sadly, there are over 10,000 drowning fatalities every year in the Philippines and the reality is that this number could be doubled if all fatalities were recorded and doubled again if all diseases attributed to flood aftermath were accounted for.

After what is now years of consultations with Mayors, Government officials, NGO’s and Rescue and Disaster Response units this year they have made significant progress building on achievements made within the provinces of Mindanao. There are now plans to deliver future training courses in Luzon, Bohol and more in Cagayan De Oro.

What seemed to be a bit too Ambitious in the beginning their project is now generating momentum gaining full support from the Cagayan De Oro department of Tourism, The Philippine Life Saving Society, and more recently Central Government. They have even made the front page of two papers. However, it’s not for the faint hearted typically the regions where you find the white water is in Mindanao (cracking rivers) and the FCDO deems this region Red / Orange and advises ‘against all travel’.

The mission continues but needs more support. As well as providing training the aim is to develop the Rescue and Disaster Response infrastructure between provinces and Nationally throughout the islands and to equip rescue teams with specialist water rescue equipment, if you would like to donate or offer your support in any way it would be very much appreciated.
