Embracing the Peak Season: A Year of Sea Kayaking Adventures | Jon Hynes

Posted By: Jon Published: 20/12/2024

As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year brimming with sea kayaking adventures, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences. The journey has been both exhilarating and deeply fulfilling, marked by exciting expeditions, meaningful collaborations, and rewarding teaching opportunities.

Championing Skills and Assessments

This year, I was privileged to contribute extensively to Canoeing Ireland’s skills training courses and assessments. Supporting paddlers on their journeys toward personal and professional development has been incredibly rewarding. Witnessing their progress and passion for the sport has fueled my own continuing drive to give back to the kayaking community.

Volunteering with the SKARG Group

Serving on the Sea Kayak Award Review Group (SKARG) has been a highlight of 2024. Working with like-minded individuals dedicated to shaping the future of sea kayaking has been an enriching experience. Together, we’ve made strides toward evolving the award system to better support aspiring sea kayakers.

Hosting International Sea Kayakers

Ireland’s rugged coastline once again played host to adventurous sea kayakers from around the world. Supporting paddlers on Irish coastal expeditions and even some on Round Ireland Circumnavigations was an absolute privilege. Sharing our stunning seascapes while fostering international kayaking camaraderie remains a deep passion close to my heart.

Cultural Connections in Brittany and Norway

Following a great trip to CK Mer in April, August saw me return to Brittany, strengthening the Irish-Breton sea kayaking cultural connections through exploration and coaching. September brought new adventures in Norway, where I delivered expert training alongside some other great Coaches to sea kayakers from various clubs. These experiences underscored the shared love for the sea that unites paddlers across borders.

Wilderness and Outdoor First Aid Instruction

My role on the WEMSI faculty continued to evolve, deepening my expertise in Wilderness and Remote Emergency Care. Looking ahead, I’m excited to specialise in outdoor first aid courses tailored specifically for sea kayakers, whitewater paddlers, SUP adventurers, and open canoeists.

The Gear That Keeps Me Going

Throughout every adventure, my Peak gear has been a constant companion. My Peak drysuit and Adventure Zip PFD have proven invaluable, offering unmatched comfort and reliability. Contributing design ideas for the upcoming Wraptor Zip and H2O PFDs has been an exciting creative outlet, blending functionality with performance. Looking forward to growing more with Peak in 2025.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on this incredible year, I’m filled with gratitude for the places I’ve explored, the people I’ve met, and the memories forged on the water. Here’s to new horizons, bold expeditions, and another year of embracing the Peak season! Seasons greetings to you all.
