Mexico Early Season

November and the first half of December is what I’d call the early kayak season in Mexico. This is when we can expect more water which results in a number of things; more of the bigger drops run at a good flow more regularly, the main class 4/5 runs are pretty stout, but also the Bobos river runs higher giving us six different boulder garden sections that run from class 2/3 to class 4…this is a lesser known river in Veracruz but the more I explore it the more I realise what an amazing river it is!

Because of these higher conditions we get a mix of kayakers visiting us during the early season…either paddlers looking to send some of the bigger iconic drops like Tomata 1, Twisted Pleasure, Truchas and San Pedro, or looking to enjoy the pushier river conditions.

Or it’s also an amazing time for us to run guided trips or days for kayakers looking for class 3/3+ kayaking and wanting to push into class 4. The good levels make all the sections of the Bobos perfect for progression, and with the good levels also making the steep class 4 roadside section of the Alsesseca a little more fluffy, this level of kayaker is really well catered for. Put this together with the accommodation, food and river shuttle facilities here at Aventurec, there really aren’t any excuses not to come and visit!

The combination of warm weather, possibility of some rain, warm water and Jungle gorges mean I’ve definitely got attached to some pieces of kit that are perfect in these conditions, here are some of my favourites:

  • Freeride - this is a great jacket for warmer conditions, its comfortable and light…but still keeps you warm and dry enough when you’re in deep gorges!

  • Thermal Rashy Pants - keep you warm even when you’re wet, and the full leg coverage is essential when walking through the jungle, to protect you from spikey vines and the nibbling insects.

  • Wrapid Guide PFD - I’m loving then new Wrapid Guide PFD, for river boating I now much prefer the ease and versatility of a wrap BA. The bigger front pockets give plenty of space for all my safety kit and phone, the added side foam provides extra rib protection and the new buckle system is easy to use and keeps the BA securely in place. You really have to give it a try!

See you on the water…hopefully in Mexico!!
