Surf Success for Peakuk team

Last week saw the Northern Ireland surf kayak team run the home internationals and British Surf kayak championships at Whiterocks, Port Rush, Northern Ireland.

Peak paddlers Dan and Tamsin Green made the trip over from the North east, a short hop for a change to be greeted by great surf and a slight chill in the air. A few lay days before the competition allowed for some good free surfing with the rest of the England team in preparation for the Homes a Bi annual event between the UK s different nations. This year saw teams from England, N Ireland, Scotland and The Republic of Ireland.

The competition kicked off with the Home Internationals. Some great surf on the first day of the contest saw England get ahead and finished 5 points clear of N Ireland going into the second day. With a slight lead morale was high for round two. The competition was hard fought through out day two with England’s lead being narrowed through out the event. Tamsin and Dan held their own in the comp with Dan coming first in his heat and Tamsin achieving 4 firsts for England. With the last 4 heats to go there was just 3 points separating 1st and 2nd place. The lead switched several times during the closing stages of the final but some great surfing by team England saw them claim the title by just 1 point from Northern Ireland and some very happy England team members. Thanks to John Watson for pulling together a great bunch of folks to paddle for England.

Still on a high from winning the Homes it was straight into the British Championships on the Friday. The first day saw both Dan and Tamsin safely though to the next round of the HP events. With a great feast laid on in Bar 55 Portrush the competitors were fully refuelled ready for the next days competing. Success in the semis on Saturday secured a place in the finals of of both HP and IC for Tamsin. Dan surfed some great waves to secure a place in the semi finals but was knocked out in a tough heat so had to settle for 7th place.. Tamsin narrowly missed out on 1st place in the HP final however did triumph in the IC final to take the British title.

It had been a hard fought week of competition with good waves throughout the comp and some amazing surfing from all involved. It was a definite high to end the surf kayak season on. The standard of kayak surfing in the UK is phenomenal at the moment and can only get better as groups of surfers around the country are pushing each other and exploring the oceans around our Isle.
