European Canoe Polo Champs Seven members of Viking Canoe Polo Club have recently returned from the European Canoe Polo Championships in Germany with plenty to be pleased with.
In the Men’s category five members of Viking were part of the eight man GB men’s squad. The men’s team lost narrowly in golden goal extra time to Italy (the eventual winners) in the semi final. They went on to an impressive display against the Dutch winning 8-4 to claim the Bronze medal. The players involved were; Nick Archer(captain), Martyn Williamson, Tom Baston, James Bowers and George Murfin.
Claire Mitchell represented Great Britain Women, already holding the World and World Games titles the women beat the Dutch in the Final to complete the set becoming European Champions too.
Gallin Montgomery represented GB under 21 men. After winning Gold at last years World Championship in Canada the Under 21’s hopes were high, however with three players ageing out the team needed to play to their potential, after a great start the team struggled in the later stages finishing fifth overall.
GB under 21 women completed the medal haul with a Silver Medal. Overall it was a great result for the GB teams, one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. The teams are now looking to improve for next years World Championship in Milan, Italy.
The five members of Viking that played in the senior men’s team also have their sights set on further success. They are current Derby City Council Sports Team of the Year and have been nominated again this year. After winning both the National League and National Club Championships in the 2008/09 season they are looking to repeat the success next year.
