Steve Brooks - Zanskar Part Two

Steve Brooks - Zanskar Part Two

With our boats packed we were about to head down the river for 4 days. This season the weather had been extremely sunny and warm so with record river levels over the
month of August it was going to make for a big and bouncy run.

We managed to camp on a grassy verge before the canyon and watched the sky turn all colours as the weather came in, luckily for us we were right under a strip of blue sky so
we managed to watch all of this in the dry!!

The next day saw us get into the canyon and finally leave the trails and road project behind, we were now on our own! The colours of the canyon walls were unreal, greens, reds, violet and various shades of chocolate! The river was great, some big waves, a few drops and a load of boils to keep you on your toes throughout the gorge. The last day
saw us run some of the best whitewater of the expedition and the boils were testing, especially over 3400 metres in altitude.

We got back to Leh tired, checked into our local Guest House and drank tea for the rest of the day. The plan was then to run the Upper Indus but the snow came and we got
stuck in Leh for a few extra days. The Indus was too low so we headed over the snow covered passes back to Manali.

The plan now, well hire some Royal Enfield motorbikes and head out for a couple of weeks to recce some rivers.

Life is good!!
