Rio Pozuzo and the Santa Cruz

Steve and John are now safely back to their base of the Alps. Here is the next part of their Peruvian adventure...

After a brutal bus journey out of the jungle to Lima we headed on yet another bus journey from Lima to the remote colonial jungle town of Pozuzo.

Here we had the opportunity to speak German (well more Tyrolean) with the descendants of the Austrians who founded Pozuzo. We made some good friends, ate some decent food and not only did we drink some of the best coffee Peru has to offer but John also managed to get a birthday cake from Maria!

We paddled the Rio Pozuzo for a couple of days, a class V day stretch that finished in town and we also managed to put in a first descent of the Rio Santa Cruz. The whole village had come out to watch us and were absolutely amazed that "2 Gringos" were kayaking the river. As we passed under a wooden footbridge everyone ran to the other side and nearly flipped the village into the river!! The rest of the village that could not get onto the bridge were packed into cars and trucks and followed us down the track catching glimpses through the jungle!

A great little river and a good way to head down to the city of Arequipa and the Cotahuasi Canyon, the worlds deepest.
